It's Friday and the weekend is upon us! If the weather is permitting, this weekend may be the perfect time for an invigorating run. Running outdoors is one of many summertime activities which benefit both our body and mind. "The body benefits from movement and the mind benefits from stillness." When we run, we can clear our mind of all the potential chatter and intrusive thoughts that may come during the busyness of everyday life. When we run, we are free. It is really like being in a meditative state. We are aware of our surroundings but, at the same time, we are reconnecting. We run and we focus on our breathing and we reconnect with our breath, with our body, and with the Universe!
If running seems too ambitious for you, then start off by taking a walk instead of a run. You'll still be moving your body and receiving the benefits. Even one of the most brilliant scientists in history, Albert Einstein, was known to incorporate walking into his daily routine. It is said that Einstein enjoyed listening to the rhythm of his footsteps while he walked and he believed walking was important for keeping his mind sharp and focused. Albert Einstein recognized the importance of the mind-body connection and he would take regular walks to be active and keep a balanced lifestyle.
According to the BBC, taking daily walks was one of the key things Einstein did to stay fit both physically and mentally. During his time at Princeton University, Albert Einstein would go on regular walks, walking about a mile and a half to and from campus. The BBC report states that going on these walks gave Einstein the opportunity to clear his head, think and solve problems, which led to his being able to be creative and think more clearly. Einstein believed that his regular walks not only improved his physical health but aided him in staying mentally focused as well.
What do YOU have planned for your weekend? Will you be going for a run or a walk? It is beneficial to do activities that help you stay active and at the same time, clear your mind and allow yourself to refocus and reconnect. Running and walking are two great ways to achieve this but they aren't the only way.
